Founded in 1933, Lacoste is a French clothing company which marks the legacy of the tennis star, René Lacoste. It was in 1927 that René Lacoste had made for himself a batch of shirts he said were “more comfortable to wear in the heat of the American courts.” These shirts completely absorbed perspiration by being constructed of a mesh material. These caused a sensation on the courts and redefined men’s sportswear. Such a shirt allowed freedom of movement whilst still accommodating the tennis player’s graceful appearance. Furthermore, its collar allowed it to look equally as smart on the tennis court as it did under blazers and sweaters. From this point, the collection expanded into everyday wear and as a universal brand, Lacoste appeals to a very wide audience with its comfortable sophistication.
